Assistive Device Ambulation (Use of Crutches, Cane, and Walker)
Patients who are immobile for even a short time may require assistance with ambulation. Whenever assisting a patient up and out of bed or a chair, there is a risk for fainting. Use safety precautions to control for orthostatic hypotension and subsequent falling. Use of an assistive device increases stability. These devices range from standard canes to crutches and walkers (Pierson and Fairchild, 2008).
