Of the technologies used in this assignment, only VoiceThread is considered to be an emerging technology. It is a Web 2.0 application because it is free, allows users to upload images and record audio easily without sophisticated multimedia expertise, provides an option for viewers to write or record comments that are posted on the same page as a story, and includes a “tagging” feature so that potential viewers can search for a piece using key words.

Planning was key to the success of this assignment. Gazarian contacted Academic Technology staff in advance to identify format options and to arrange for technical support in the event that students needed help creating their digital stories. Despite preliminary concerns that some students might be reluctant, Gazarian reported that “willingness to use technology to tell their stories was overwhelming” and the assignment was a “rich learning experience for all involved.”
