Therapeutic Actions

Mechanism of action not fully understood; blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, depresses the reticular activating system; effective in suppressing many of the negative aspects of schizophrenia (blunted affect, social withdrawal, lack of motivation, anger).



Indications



  • Treatment of schizophrenia and to delay the time and rate of relapse


  • Oral: Treatment of acute bipolar mania including manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder with or without psychotic features; maintenance treatment, used with lithium and valproate


  • IM: Rapid control of agitated behavior and psychotic symptoms in patients with acute schizophrenia exacerbations


  • Unlabeled uses: Autism, Tourette syndrome
