Therapeutic Actions

Selectively inhibits influenza virus neuroaminidase; by blocking the actions of this enzyme, there is decreased viral release from infected cells, increased formation of viral aggregates, and decreased spread of the virus.


Indications



  • Prevention and treatment of uncomplicated acute illness due to influenza virus in adults and children 7 yr and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days


  • Prevention of influenza in patients 5 yr and older


  • Unlabeled use: Treatment of H1N1 infection



Available Forms

Powder blister for inhalation—5 mg



Dosages

Adults and children 7 yr and older

Treatment: Two inhalations (one 5-mg blister per inhalation administered with a Diskhaler device, for a total of 10 mg) bid at 12-hr intervals for 5 days. Should be started within 2 days of onset of flu symptoms; give two doses on the first treatment day, at least 2 hr apart; subsequent doses should be separated by 12 hr.
