Therapeutic Actions
Interferes with platelet membrane function by inhibiting fibrinogen binding and platelet-platelet interactions; inhibits platelet aggregation and prolongs bleeding time; effect is irreversible for life of the platelet.
Indications
Reduces risk of thrombotic stroke in patients who have experienced stroke precursors and in patients who have had a completed thrombotic stroke; reserve use for patients who are intolerant to aspirin therapy because side effects may be life-threatening
Prevention of acute stent thrombosis in coronary arteries; used with antiplatelet doses of aspirin
Unlabeled uses: Intermittent claudication, chronic arterial occlusion, subarachnoid hemorrhage, uremic patients with AV shunts or fistulas, open-heart surgery, coronary artery bypass grafts, primary glomerulonephritis, sickle cell disease
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to ticlopidine, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, history of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), hemostatic disorders, bleeding ulcer, intracranial bleeding, severe liver disease, lactation.
Use cautiously with renal disorders, pregnancy, elevated cholesterol, recent trauma.
