Thyroid agents are used to treat hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is called myxedema in adults and cretinism in children. Goiter may also occur in some forms of hypothyroidism and results in an enlarged thyroid gland. Synthetic thyroid agents are usually more prescribed as they are more stable and standardized than desiccated or natural thyroid.1
Treatment of hypothyroidism is aimed at eliminating symptoms so that normal hormonal balance is restored.

Consult with health care provider before taking other OTC medications or herbal remedies.
Do not stop taking without consulting with health care provider.
Do not change brands unless approved by health care provider, as this can affect bioavailability.
If a dose is missed, take as soon as remembered unless almost time for next dose.
Thyroid drugs do not cure hypothyroidism, and therapy is lifelong.
Take exactly as ordered, at the same time daily (preferably in the morning) to prevent insomnia.
Report chest pain, palpitations, weight loss, insomnia, headache, nervousness, excessive perspiration, heat intolerance, or any other unusual symptoms to health care provider.
Thyroid function studies are performed at least yearly, and follow-up examinations are indicated.
Check pulse before taking drug. If pulse is greater than 100 beats per minute in adults, or if pulse rate is elevated in children, hold and notify health care provider.
Inform health care provider or dentist if taking thyroid preparations.
