Therapeutic Actions
Increases the metabolic rate of body tissues, increasing oxygen consumption, respiratory and heart rate; rate of fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism; and growth and maturation; exact mechanism of action is not known.
Indications
Replacement therapy in hypothyroidism
Treatment of thyroid cancer
Treatment or prevention of various types of euthyroid goiters
Treatment of thyrotoxicosis with antithyroid drugs to prevent goitrogenesis and hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy
Diagnostic use in suppression tests
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to active drug or excipients; thyrotoxicosis and acute MI uncomplicated by hypothyroidism; uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
Use cautiously with Addison disease (treatment of hypoadrenalism with corticosteroids should precede thyroid therapy), pregnancy, lactation, myxedema, allergy to pork products, CV disease, elderly patients.

Dosages
Adults
Hypothyroidism: Initially, 30 mg/day PO, increased by 15 mg/day every 2–3 wk. Usual maintenance dose is 60–120 mg PO daily.
Geriatric patients or patients with heart disease or longstanding hypothyroidism
