Therapeutic Actions
A synthetic allylamine that is thought to block squalene oxidase, thus preventing the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell walls.
Indications

Treatment of tinea capitis in patients 4 yr and older (oral granules)

Treatment of onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail caused by dermatophytes

Topical treatment of tinea versicolor, tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis
Contraindications and Cautions

Contraindicated with allergy to any component of the product, hepatic failure, lactation.

Use cautiously with hepatic impairment, renal impairment, immunodeficiency, pregnancy.

Tablets—250 mg; oral granules—125, 187.5 mg; cream, gel, spray—1%
Dosages
Adults

Fingernail onychomycosis: 250 mg/day PO for 6 wk.

Toenail onychomycosis: 250 mg/day PO for 12 wk.

Tinea capitis: 250 mg/day PO for 6 wk.
Pediatric patients
Tinea capitis
Weight less than 25 kg: 125 mg/day PO for 6 wk.
25–35 kg: 187.5 mg/day PO for 6 wk.
Weight more than 35 kg: 250 mg/day PO for 6 wk.
