Drug Classes

Antiviral

Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor


Therapeutic Actions

Antiviral activity; inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase activity, leading to a blocking of HIV reproduction.


Indications



  • Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretrovirals


  • Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults and children 12 yr and older weighing 35 kg or more



Available Forms

Tablets—150, 200, 250, 300 mg; power—40 mg/g


Dosages

Adults

300 mg/day PO without regard to food.

Pediatric patients 12 yr and older



  • Chronic hepatitis B (if weighing 35 kg or more): 300 mg/day PO.


  • HIV: 300 mg/day PO.

Pediatric patients 2–11 yr



  • HIV: 8 mg/kg/day PO.


  • Chronic hepatitis B: Not recommended.

Patients with renal impairment

Adjust dosage as follows:

50 or more 300 mg every 24 hr
30–49 300 mg every 48 hr
10–29 300 mg twice a wk
Hemodialysis 300 mg every wk or after a total of about 12 hr of dialysis
