Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor
Therapeutic Actions
Antiviral activity; inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase activity, leading to a blocking of HIV reproduction.
Indications
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretrovirals
Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults and children 12 yr and older weighing 35 kg or more
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to tenofovir or other components of the product; breast-feeding HIV patients
Use cautiously in pregnancy, hepatic or renal impairment, lactation (hepatitis B).
Available Forms
Tablets—150, 200, 250, 300 mg; power—40 mg/g
Dosages
Adults
300 mg/day PO without regard to food.
Pediatric patients 12 yr and older
Chronic hepatitis B (if weighing 35 kg or more): 300 mg/day PO.
HIV: 300 mg/day PO.
Pediatric patients 2–11 yr
HIV: 8 mg/kg/day PO.
Chronic hepatitis B: Not recommended.
Patients with renal impairment
Adjust dosage as follows:
