Therapeutic Actions
Bacteriostatic or bactericidal in susceptible bacteria; binds to sites on bacterial ribosomes, causing change in protein function, leading to cell death.
Indications
Only for treatment of mild to moderately severe community-acquired pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (including multi-drug resistant strains), Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Chlamydophilia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae in patients 18 yr and older
Unlabeled use: Sinusitis
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to telithromycin, to any component of the drug, or any macrolide antibiotic or cisapride; congenital QT prolongation, proarrhythmic conditions (hypokalemia), significant bradycardia; concurrent use of pimozide, class Ia or III antiarrhythmics, simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatain; myasthenia gravis; history of hepatitis or jaundice.
Use cautiously with renal or hepatic impairment, pregnancy, lactation.

Dosages
Adults
Give 800 mg once daily PO for 7–10 days.
Pediatric patients
Safety and efficacy not established.
Patients with renal impairment
In patients with CrCl less than 30 mL/min, including those on dialysis, give 600 mg PO once daily for 7–10 days after dialysis session is complete. In patients with CrCl less than 30 mL/min and coexisting hepatic impairment, give 400 mg PO once daily for 7–10 days.
