Therapeutic Actions
Forms water-soluble chelates with lead, leading to increased urinary excretion of lead.
Indications
Treatment of lead poisoning in children with blood levels greater than 45 mcg/dL (not for prophylactic use)
Orphan drug use: Prevention of cystine kidney stones in patients with homozygous cystinuria
Unlabeled use: Treatment of other heavy metal poisonings (mercury, arsenic)
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to succimer, pregnancy (teratogenic and embryotoxic), lactation.
Use cautiously with impaired renal or hepatic function.

Capsules—100 mg
Dosages
Pediatric patients
Starting dose of 10 mg/kg or 350 mg/m2 every 8 hr PO for 5 days; reduce dosage to 10 mg/kg or 350 mg/m2 every 12 hr PO for 2 wk (therapy runs for 19 days).
