Therapeutic Actions

Forms water-soluble chelates with lead, leading to increased urinary excretion of lead.


Indications



  • Treatment of lead poisoning in children with blood levels greater than 45 mcg/dL (not for prophylactic use)


  • Orphan drug use: Prevention of cystine kidney stones in patients with homozygous cystinuria


  • Unlabeled use: Treatment of other heavy metal poisonings (mercury, arsenic)



Available Forms

Capsules—100 mg


Dosages

Pediatric patients

Starting dose of 10 mg/kg or 350 mg/m2 every 8 hr PO for 5 days; reduce dosage to 10 mg/kg or 350 mg/m2 every 12 hr PO for 2 wk (therapy runs for 19 days).
