Therapeutic Actions
Synthetic antiviral agent that inhibits viral replication, possibly by preventing the uncoating of the virus.
Indications
Prophylaxis and treatment of illness caused by influenza A virus in adults
Prophylaxis against influenza A virus in children
Unlabeled uses: Treatment and prophylaxis of H1N1 (swine flu) infection, treatment of influenza A in children
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to amantadine, rimantadine; lactation.
Use cautiously with seizures, liver or renal disease, pregnancy.
Available Forms
Tablets—100 mg
Dosages
Adults and patients older than 10 yr
Prophylaxis: 100 mg/day PO bid.
Treatment: Same dose as above; start treatment as soon after exposure as possible, continuing for 7 days from initial onset of symptoms.
