Therapeutic Actions
Gastric acid-pump inhibitor: Suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the hydrogen and potassium ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cells; blocks the final step of acid production.
Indications
Healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD; 4–8 wk therapy; may use additional 8 wk as needed
Short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD in children 12 yr and older for up to 8 wk
Treatment of daytime and nighttime heartburn and other symptoms of GERD
NEW INDICATION: Treatment of GERD in children 1–11 yr for up to 12 wk
Healing of duodenal ulcers as short-term treatment of less than 4 wk
Treatment of pathologic hypersecretory conditions (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple adenomas, systemic mastocytosis)
Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin
Unlabeled use: Prevention of GI bleeding in patients taking antiplatelet drugs
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to any proton pump inhibitor or any drug components.
Use cautiously because of possible increased risk of Clostridium difficile diarrhea.
Use cautiously with pregnancy, lactation.
