Therapeutic Actions

Gastric acid-pump inhibitor: Suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the hydrogen and potassium ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cells; blocks the final step of acid production.


Indications



  • Healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD; 4–8 wk therapy; may use additional 8 wk as needed


  • Short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD in children 12 yr and older for up to 8 wk


  • Treatment of daytime and nighttime heartburn and other symptoms of GERD


  • NEW INDICATION: Treatment of GERD in children 1–11 yr for up to 12 wk


  • Healing of duodenal ulcers as short-term treatment of less than 4 wk


  • Treatment of pathologic hypersecretory conditions (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple adenomas, systemic mastocytosis)


  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin


  • Unlabeled use: Prevention of GI bleeding in patients taking antiplatelet drugs
