Promoting Collaboration through Communication
If collaboration is valued and communication is a way to achieve collaboration, how can nurses work collectively and individually to achieve collaboration?
On a macro level, nurses can work through their professional associations, such as the ANA, to develop guidelines that organizations can use to create environments that foster good communication. Ideally, these associations will also collaborate. For instance, the ANA and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) (2012) developed Principles for Collaborative Relationships between Clinical Nurses and Nurse Managers. The three categories of collaborative principles are effective communication, authentic relationships, and a learning environment and culture. These principles should be integrated into the organizational culture.
