Therapeutic Actions
Inhibits the renal tubular reabsorption of urate, increasing the urinary excretion of uric acid, decreasing serum uric acid levels, retarding urate deposition, and promoting resorption of urate deposits; also inhibits the renal tubular reabsorption of most penicillins and cephalosporins.
Indications
Treatment of hyperuricemia associated with gout and gouty arthritis (adults)
Adjuvant to therapy with penicillins or cephalosporins, for elevation and prolongation of plasma levels of the antibiotic
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to probenecid, blood dyscrasias, uric acid kidney stones, acute gouty attack.
Use cautiously with peptic ulcer, acute intermittent porphyria, G6PD deficiency, chronic renal insufficiency, in patients with sulfa allergy, lactation, pregnancy.

Tablets—0.5 g
Dosages
Adults
Gout: 0.25 g PO bid for 1 wk; then 0.5 g PO bid. Maximum 2–3 g/day. For maintenance, continue dosage that maintains the normal serum uric acid levels. When no attacks occur for 6 mo or longer, decrease the daily dosage by 0.5 g every 6 mo.
Penicillin or cephalosporin therapy: 2 g/day PO in divided doses.
Gonorrhea treatment: Single 1-g dose PO 30 min before penicillin administration.
Pediatric patients 2 yr and older
