Purpose



  • To detect organ dysfunction through positrons being emitted from radioactive chemicals in the organ that are sensed by a series of detectors positioned around the child


  • To evaluate the heart and brain in many aspects of oncology (most common use)


  • To help detect cerebral dysfunction caused by tumors, seizures, head trauma, and some mental illnesses


  • To evaluate myocardial metabolism, and distinguish viable from infarcted cardiac tissue
