Therapeutic Actions
Maintains plasma colloid osmotic pressure and carries intermediate metabolites in the transport and exchange of tissue products; important in the maintenance of normal blood volume.
Indications
Supportive treatment of shock due to burns, trauma, surgery, and infections
Hypoproteinemia–nephrotic syndrome, hepatic cirrhosis, toxemia of pregnancy, postoperative patients, tuberculous patients, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), renal dialysis
Acute liver failure
Sequestration of protein-rich fluids
Hyperbilirubinemia and erythroblastosis fetalis as an adjunct to exchange transfusions
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to albumin, severe anemia, cardiac failure, normal or increased intravascular volume, current use of cardiopulmonary bypass, severe anemia.
Use cautiously with hepatic or renal failure, hypertension, pregnancy.

Dosages
Administer by IV infusion only. Contains 130–160 mEq sodium/L. Do not give more than 250 g in 48 hr; if it seems that more is required, patient probably needs whole blood or plasma.
Adults
Hypovolemic shock: 250–500 mL IV as an initial dose. Do not exceed 10 mL/min. Adjust dosage based on patient response. Do not exceed 5–8 mL/min as plasma volume approaches normal.Stay updated, free articles. Join our Telegram channel
