Drug Classes

Antihypertensive

Beta-adrenergic blocker (nonselective)


Therapeutic Actions

Competitively blocks beta-adrenergic receptors but also has some intrinsic sympathomimetic activity; however, the mechanism by which it lowers BP is unclear, because it only slightly decreases resting cardiac output and inconsistently affects plasma renin levels.


Indications



  • Management of hypertension, alone or with other drugs, especially diuretics


  • Unlabeled uses: Treatment of fibromyalgia; prevention of migraine; traumatic brain injury



Available Forms

Tablets—5, 10 mg


Dosages

Adults

Initially, 5 mg PO bid. Adjust dosage as needed in increments of 10 mg/day at 3- to 4-wk intervals to a maximum of 60 mg/day. Usual maintenance dose is 5 mg tid.

Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy not established.
