Therapeutic Actions
Competitively blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart and juxtaglomerular apparatus, reducing the influence of the sympathetic nervous system on these tissues; decreasing the excitability of the heart, cardiac output, and release of renin; and lowering BP.
Indications
Treatment of mild to moderate hypertension, alone or as part of combination therapy
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to components of drug, sinus bradycardia, bronchial asthma, COPD, second- or third-degree heart block, cardiogenic shock, HF, lactation, second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Use cautiously with renal failure, diabetes or thyrotoxicosis, thyroid disease, impaired hepatic function, pregnancy.

Dosages
Adults
Usual starting dose, maintenance dose, and dose used in combination with other antihypertensives: 20 mg PO daily. Doses of 40–80 mg daily have been used but with no additional antihypertensive effect.
Pediatric patients
