Therapeutic Actions

Synthetic derivative of lipostatin, a naturally occurring lipase inhibitor or so-called fat blocker. Binds to gastric and pancreatic lipase to prevent the digestion of fats. When taken with fat-containing foods, the fat passes through the intestines unchanged and is not absorbed.


Indications



  • Treatment of obesity as part of weight loss program that includes diet and exercise


  • Reduction of risk of weight regain after prior weight loss



Available Forms

Capsules—60 (Alli), 120 mg (Xenical)


Dosages

Adults

120 mg tid PO with each main meal containing fat. For OTC use, 60 mg PO with each meal containing fat, not exceeding 3 capsules/day.

Pediatric patients 12 yr and older

120 mg PO tid with fat-containing meals; OTC not for use in children.
