Histamine-2 (H2) antagonist
Therapeutic Actions
Inhibits the action of histamine at the H2 receptors of the parietal cells of the stomach, inhibiting basal gastric acid secretion and gastric acid secretion that is stimulated by food, caffeine, insulin, histamine, cholinergic agonists, gastrin, and pentagastrin. Total pepsin output also is reduced.
Indications
Short-term and maintenance treatment of duodenal ulcer
Short-term treatment of benign gastric ulcer
GERD
OTC: Prevention of heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach brought on by eating
Unlabeled uses: Prevention of olanzapine-related weight gain; prevention of NSAID-related ulcers
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to nizatidine, lactation.
Use cautiously with impaired renal or hepatic function, pregnancy.
Available Forms
Capsules—150, 300 mg; OTC tablets—75 mg; oral solution—15 mg/mL
Dosages
Adults
Active duodenal ulcer: 300 mg PO daily at bedtime. 150 mg PO bid may be used. Most ulcers heal in 4 wk.
Maintenance of healed duodenal ulcer: 150 mg PO daily at bedtime.
GERD: 150 mg PO bid.
