Histamine-2 (H2) antagonist


Therapeutic Actions

Inhibits the action of histamine at the H2 receptors of the parietal cells of the stomach, inhibiting basal gastric acid secretion and gastric acid secretion that is stimulated by food, caffeine, insulin, histamine, cholinergic agonists, gastrin, and pentagastrin. Total pepsin output also is reduced.


Indications



  • Short-term and maintenance treatment of duodenal ulcer


  • Short-term treatment of benign gastric ulcer


  • GERD


  • OTC: Prevention of heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach brought on by eating


  • Unlabeled uses: Prevention of olanzapine-related weight gain; prevention of NSAID-related ulcers

Capsules—150, 300 mg; OTC tablets—75 mg; oral solution—15 mg/mL
