Therapeutic Actions

A synthetic cannabinoid that interacts with the cannabinoid receptor systems in the CNS, causing an antiemetic effect as well as effects on mental state, dry mouth, and hypotension.


Indications



  • Treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy in patients who have had inadequate response to conventional antiemetic therapies



Available Forms

Capsules—1 mg


Dosages

Adults

1–2 mg PO bid. Initial dose given 1–3 hr before chemotherapy begins. Maximum recommended dose, 6 mg/day PO, divided and given tid. May be given daily during each chemotherapy cycle and for 48 hr after last dose in cycle, if needed. Patient should be under close supervision because of risk of altered mental state.

Pediatric patients younger than 18 yr

Safety and efficacy not established.
