Myelography
Purpose
To demonstrate lesions partially or totally blocking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in the subarachnoid space (tumors and herniated intervertebral disks)
To detect arachnoiditis, spinal nerve root injury, or tumors in the posterior fossa of the skull
Patient preparation
Make sure that the consent form is signed by the child’s parents or legal guardians.
Check the child’s history for hypersensitivity to iodine and iodine-containing substances, such as shellfish and contrast media.
Enforce restriction of food and fluids for 8 hours before the test.
Notify the radiologist if the child has a history of epilepsy or of antidepressant or phenothiazine use.
Give the child a sedative and an anticholinergic, as ordered.
Explain to the child that when the contrast medium is injected, he may feel a burning sensation, warmth, headache, salty taste, or nausea and vomiting.
