Therapeutic Actions
A CNS stimulant that helps to improve vigilance and decrease excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy and other sleep disorders; may act through dopaminergic mechanisms; exact mechanism of action is not known. Not associated with the cardiac and other systemic stimulatory effects of amphetamines.
Indications
Treatment of narcolepsy with excessive daytime sleepiness
Improvement in wakefulness in patients with shift-work sleep disorder (SWSD)
Improvement in wakefulness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS)
Unlabeled uses: Treatment of fatigue associated with MS, Parkinson disease, brain injury, ADHD
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to modafinil, left ventricular hypertrophy, ischemic ECG changes, mitral valve prolapse.
Use cautiously with impaired renal or hepatic function, epilepsy, emotional instability, psychosis, depression, mania, pregnancy, lactation.
