Therapeutic Actions

Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities related to inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is required for the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Somewhat more selective for COX-2 sites (found in the brain, kidneys, ovaries, uterus, cartilage, bone, and at sites of inflammation) than for COX-1 sites, which are found throughout the tissues and are related to protection of the GI mucosa.


Indications



  • Relief from the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis


  • Relief from the signs and symptoms of pauciarticular or polyarticular course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in patients 2 yr or older


  • Unlabeled uses: Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, acute shoulder pain



Available Forms

Tablets—7.5, 15 mg; oral suspension—7.5 mg/5 mL


Dosages

Adults

Starting dose, 7.5 mg PO daily. Maximum dosage, 15 mg PO daily.

Pediatric patients 2 yr and older

0.125 mg/kg PO once daily up to a maximum dose of 7.5 mg, using oral suspension.
