Therapeutic Actions
Potent histamine (H1) receptor antagonist; inhibits histamine release and eosinophil chemotaxis during inflammation, reducing swelling and inflammatory response.
Indications
Relief from symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 6 mo and older
Treatment of uncomplicated skin effects in chronic idiopathic urticaria in patients 2 yr and older
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, any of its components, or cetirizine; end-stage renal disease; renal impairment in children 6–11 yr; lactation.
Use cautiously with pregnancy and with use of CNS depressants.
Available Forms
Tablets—5 mg; oral solution—2.5 mg/5 mL
Dosages
Adults and children 12 yr and older
5 mg/day PO, taken in the evening.
Children 6–11 yr
2.5 mg/day PO taken in the evening.
Children 6 mo–5 yr
1.25 mg (½ tsp oral solution) PO once daily in the evening.
