Therapeutic Actions
Inhibits synthesis of the active thyroid hormones T3 and T4 and inhibits the release of these hormones into circulation.
Indications
Hyperthyroidism: Adjunctive therapy with antithyroid drugs in preparation for thyroidectomy, treatment of thyrotoxic crisis, or neonatal thyrotoxicosis
Thyroid blocking in a radiation emergency (Iosat, ThyroSafe, ThyroShield)
Unlabeled uses: Potassium iodide has been effective with Sweet syndrome, treatment of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis in combination with a potent topical steroid
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to iodides.
Use cautiously with pulmonary edema, pulmonary TB (sodium iodide); pregnancy; lactation.
Available Forms
Solution—5% iodine, 10% potassium iodide; tablets—65, 130 mg potassium iodide; solution—65 mg/mL. 1 g/mL; syrup—325 mg/5 mL. Note: Potassium iodide tablets and drops are available only to state and federal agencies.
