Life-threatening disorder
Description
Highly malignant, nonosseous tumor that arises from cells within the bone marrow
Usually affects lower extremities, but can occur in the arms, pelvis, or chest
Occurs between ages 4 and 25, usually in males ages 10 to 20
Highly metastatic to lungs and bones with a poor prognosis
Rare in Black and Asian children
Pathophysiology
Malignant cells originate in the bone marrow and invade the shafts of the long and flat bones.
This disorder occurs most commonly in the diaphysis (midshaft) of long bones.
Metastasis usually occurs in the lungs and bones.
