Life-threatening disorder



Description



  • Highly malignant, nonosseous tumor that arises from cells within the bone marrow


  • Usually affects lower extremities, but can occur in the arms, pelvis, or chest


  • Occurs between ages 4 and 25, usually in males ages 10 to 20


  • Highly metastatic to lungs and bones with a poor prognosis


  • Rare in Black and Asian children



Pathophysiology



  • Malignant cells originate in the bone marrow and invade the shafts of the long and flat bones.


  • This disorder occurs most commonly in the diaphysis (midshaft) of long bones.


  • Metastasis usually occurs in the lungs and bones.
