Therapeutic Actions

Exact mechanisms of action not understood; acts mainly at subcortical levels of the CNS, leaving the cortex relatively unaffected; potentiates the effects of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter.


Indications



  • Insomnia characterized by difficulty in falling asleep, frequent nocturnal awakenings, or early morning awakening


  • Recurring insomnia or poor sleeping habits


  • Acute or chronic medical situations requiring restful sleep



Available Forms

Tablets—1, 2 mg


Dosages

Individualize dosage.


Adults

1 mg PO before bedtime; up to 2 mg may be needed.

Pediatric patients

Not for use in patients younger than 18 yr.

Geriatric patients or patients with debilitating disease

1 mg PO if healthy; start with 0.5 mg in debilitated patients.
