Description
Acute inflammation of the epiglottis and surrounding area
Life-threatening emergency that rapidly causes edema and induration
If left untreated, complete airway obstruction
In children ages 2 to 8, mortality 8% to 12%
Occurs from infancy to adulthood
Occurs in any season
Pathophysiology
Infection of the epiglottis and surrounding area leads to intense inflammation of the supraglottic region.
Swelling of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, arytenoid cartilage, and ventricular bands lead to acute airway obstruction.
Causes
Bacterial infection, usually Haemophilus influenzae type B
Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, or group A streptococci
Assessment findings
Recent upper respiratory tract infection
Sore throat
Dysphagia
Sudden onset of high fever
Red and inflamed throat
Fever
Drooling
Dyspnea
Pale or cyanotic skin
Restlessness and irritability
Nasal flaring
