Life-threatening disorder



Description



  • Acute inflammation of the epiglottis and surrounding area


  • Life-threatening emergency that rapidly causes edema and induration


  • If left untreated, complete airway obstruction


  • In children ages 2 to 8, mortality 8% to 12%


  • Occurs from infancy to adulthood


  • Occurs in any season



Pathophysiology



  • Infection of the epiglottis and surrounding area leads to intense inflammation of the supraglottic region.


  • Swelling of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, arytenoid cartilage, and ventricular bands lead to acute airway obstruction.


Causes



  • Bacterial infection, usually Haemophilus influenzae type B


  • Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, or group A streptococci
