Electromyography
Purpose
To differentiate among primary muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, and certain metabolic disorders
To identify diseases characterized by central neuronal degeneration
To aid in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders
To aid in diagnosing radiculomyopathies
Patient preparation
Make sure that the consent form is signed by the child’s parents or legal guardians.
Note and report all allergies.
Check for and note drugs that may interfere with test results (cholinergics, anticholinergics, anticoagulants, and skeletal muscle relaxants).
Tell the child and his parents that he need not restrict food and fluids before the test, but that it may be necessary to restrict cola for 2 to 3 hours beforehand.
Prepare the child for insertion of the needle and the feeling in the muscle when the electrical impulses are sent through. Explain that it will feel like a hard hit to the “funny bone,” and that residual bruising may occur.Stay updated, free articles. Join our Telegram channel
