(ed’ e tate)
Calcium Disodium Versenate
PREGNANCY CATEGORY B
Drug class
Antidote
Therapeutic Actions
Calcium in this compound is easily displaced by heavy metals, such as lead, to form stable complexes that are excreted in the urine; edetate disodium has strong affinity to calcium, lowering calcium levels and pulling calcium out of extracirculatory stores during slow infusion.
Indications
Acute and chronic lead poisoning and lead encephalopathy
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with sensitivity to EDTA preparations, anuria, active renal disease, hepatitis, increased intracranial pressure (rapid IV infusion).
Use cautiously with cardiac disease, heart failure, lactation, renal impairment, pregnancy.
Available Forms
Injection—200 mg/mL
Indications
Effective by IV, IM routes; IM route is safest in children and patients with lead encephalopathy.
Adults and pediatric patients
Lead poisoning: For blood levels 20–70 mcg/dL, 1,000 mg/m2/day IV or IM for 5 days. Interrupt therapy for 2–4 days; follow with another 5 days of treatment if indicated. For blood levels higher than 70 mcg/dL, combine with dimercaprol therapy.
