Therapeutic Actions
A theophylline derivative that is not metabolized to theophylline; relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, causing bronchodilation and increasing vital capacity, which has been impaired by bronchospasm and air trapping; at high doses, it also inhibits the release of slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis and histamine.
Indications
Symptomatic relief or prevention of bronchial asthma and reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to any xanthine or to ethylenediamine, peptic ulcer, active gastritis.
Use cautiously with cardiac arrhythmias, acute myocardial injury, heart failure, cor pulmonale, severe hypertension, severe hypoxemia, renal or hepatic disease, hyperthyroidism, alcoholism, pregnancy, lactation.

Tablets—200, 400 mg
Dosages
Individualize dosage based on clinical responses with monitoring of serum dyphylline levels; serum theophylline levels do not measure dyphylline; equivalence of dyphylline to theophylline is not known.
Adults
Up to 15 mg/kg, PO every 6 hr.
