Therapeutic Actions
Drug inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall and causes cell death in susceptible cells. Structure and action are similar to those of beta lactams.
Indications
Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacteroides caccea, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Bacteroides uniformis, Bacteroides vulgatus, Streptococcus intermedius, Streptococcus constellatus, Peptostreptococcus micros
Treatment of complicated UTI, including pyelonephritis, caused by E. coli, K. pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, P. aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii
Unlabeled uses: Catheter-related bloodstream infections, community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to any component of this drug or drugs in this class; history of anaphylactic reaction to beta-lactams.
Use cautiously with sodium valproate therapy, pregnancy, lactation.
Available Forms
Single-use vials—250, 500 mg
Dosages
Adults
500 mg IV over 1 hr every 8 hr for 5–14 days (intra-abdominal infection), for 10 days (UTI or pyelonephritis), or up to 14 days with concurrent bacteremia.
Patients with renal impairment
If CrCl is equal to or greater than 30 and equal to or less than 50 mL/min, 250 mg IV every 8 hr; if CrCl is greater than 10 and less than 30 mL/min, 250 mg IV every 12 hr.
