Exact mechanism of action not known: Inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase, the enzyme that breaks down prostaglandins, may account for its antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Indications
Acute or long-term treatment of mild to moderate pain
Rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to diflunisal, salicylates or other NSAIDs; with pregnancy, lactation; for treatment of perioperative pain following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Use cautiously with CV dysfunction, peptic ulceration, GI bleeding, impaired hepatic or renal function, and in elderly patients.

Dosages
Adults
Mild to moderate pain: 1,000 mg PO initially, followed by 500 mg every 8–12 hr PO.
Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis: 500–1,000 mg/day PO in two divided doses; maintenance dosage should not exceed 1,500 mg/day.
Pediatric patients 12 yr and younger
Safety and efficacy not established.
