Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor
Therapeutic Actions
A synthetic nucleoside that inhibits replication of HIV, leading to viral death.
Indications
Treatment of patients with HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral drugs
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to any component of the formulation, lactation.
Use cautiously with impaired hepatic or renal function; history of alcohol abuse; history of pancreatitis, lactic acidosis; pregnancy.

Dosages
Adults
DR capsules
60 kg or greater: 400 mg/day PO.
25–60 kg: 250 mg/day PO.
20–25 kg: 200 mg/day PO.
Powder for oral solution
60 kg or greater: 200 mg PO bid or 400 mg/day PO.
Less than 60 kg: 125 mg PO bid or 250 mg/day PO.
Adults with CrCl of 60 mL/min or more also taking tenofovir
60 kg or more: 250 mg/day PO.
Less than 60 kg: 200 mg/day PO.
Pediatric patients
Older than 8 mo: 120 mg/m2 bid using buffered formulation or pediatric powder.
2 wk–8 mo: 100 mg/m2 bid.
DR capsule can be used following adult dosage, based on weight.
Patients with renal impairment
