Glucose-elevating drug
Therapeutic Actions
Increases blood glucose by decreasing insulin release and increasing glucose.
Indications
Management of hypoglycemia due to hyperinsulinism in infants and children and due to inoperable pancreatic islet cell malignancies
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to thiazides or other sulfonamide derivatives; pregnancy, lactation, functional hypoglycemia.
Use extreme caution with decreased cardiac reserve, decreased renal function, gout, or hyperuricemia.
Available Forms
Capsules—50 mg; oral suspension—50 mg/mL
Dosages
Adults
3–8 mg/kg/day PO in two to three divided doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 3 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.
Pediatric patients
Infants and newborns: 8–15 mg/kg/day PO in two to three doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 10 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.
Children: 3–8 mg/kg/day PO in two to three doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 3 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.
