Therapeutic Actions

Increases blood glucose by decreasing insulin release and increasing glucose.


Indications



  • Management of hypoglycemia due to hyperinsulinism in infants and children and due to inoperable pancreatic islet cell malignancies



Available Forms

Capsules—50 mg; oral suspension—50 mg/mL


Dosages

Adults

3–8 mg/kg/day PO in two to three divided doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 3 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.

Pediatric patients



  • Infants and newborns: 8–15 mg/kg/day PO in two to three doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 10 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.


  • Children: 3–8 mg/kg/day PO in two to three doses every 8–12 hr. Starting dose, 3 mg/kg/day in three equal doses every 8 hr.
