Cephalocaudal From head to toe Head control preceding ability to walk
Proximodistal From the trunk to the tips of the extremities The young infant moving his arms and legs but not picking up objects with his fingers
General to specific From simple tasks to more complex tasks (mastering simple tasks before advancing to those that are more complex) The child progressing from crawling to walking to skipping
