Therapeutic Actions
Bacteriostatic: Inhibits protein synthesis of susceptible bacteria, preventing cell reproduction.
Indications
Infections caused by susceptible strains of rickettsiae; Mycoplasma pneumoniae; agents of psittacosis, ornithosis, lymphogranuloma venereum, and granuloma inguinale; Borrelia recurrentis; Haemophilus ducreyi; Pasteurella pestis; P. tularensis; Bartonella bacilliformis; Bacteroides; Vibrio cholerae; Vibrio comma; Vibrio fetus; Brucella; Escherichia coli; Enterobacter aerogenes; Shigella; Acinetobacter calcoaceticus; Haemophilus influenzae; Klebsiella; Diplococcus pneumoniae; Staphylococcus aureus; Streptococcus pyogenes; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Mycoplasma bacteria, Francisella tularensis, Lersinia pestis
When penicillin is contraindicated, infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, T. pertenue, Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium, Bacillus anthracis, Fusobacterium fusiforme, Actinomyces, Neisseria meningitidis
As an adjunct to amebicides in acute intestinal amebiasis
Treatment of acne or uncomplicated urethral, endocervical, or rectal infections in adults caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to tetracyclines; pregnancy, lactation; in children during tooth-forming years.
Use cautiously with renal or hepatic impairment.
