DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4) enzyme inhibitor


Therapeutic Actions

Slows the inactivation of the incretin hormones, increasing these hormone levels and prolonging their activity. The incretin hormones stimulate insulin release in response to a meal and help regulate glucose homeostasis throughout the day. This increases and prolongs insulin release and reduces hepatic glucose production to help achieve glycemic control.


Indications



  • As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes



Available Forms

Tablets—2.5, 5 mg


Dosages

Adults

2.5–5 mg/day PO without regard to meals.


Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy not established.

Patients with renal impairment

2.5 mg/day PO for moderate to severe renal impairment (CrCl 50 mL/min or less); administer following hemodialysis.
