Therapeutic Actions

Binds bile acids in the intestine to form a complex that is excreted in the feces; as a result, cholesterol is lost, oxidized in the liver, and serum cholesterol and LDL are lowered.


Indications



  • Adjunctive therapy: Reduction of elevated serum cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL)


  • Unlabeled uses: Digitalis toxicity, hyperoxaluria, relief of pruritus associated with biliary obstruction, adjunctive treatment of hyperthyroidism, binding of Clostridium difficile toxin



Available Forms

Tablets—1 g; granules—5-g powder/dose


Dosages

Adults

For suspension, 5–30 g/day PO once or in divided doses two to four times/day. Start with 5 g daily or bid PO, and increase in 5-g/day increments at 1- to 2-mo intervals. For tablets, 2–16 g/day PO in 1–2 divided doses; initially, 2 g once or twice daily; increasing in 2-g increments at 1- to 2-mo intervals.

Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy not established.
