Therapeutic Actions
Binds bile acids in the intestine to form a complex that is excreted in the feces; as a result, cholesterol is lost, oxidized in the liver, and serum cholesterol and LDL are lowered.
Indications
Adjunctive therapy: Reduction of elevated serum cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL)
Unlabeled uses: Digitalis toxicity, hyperoxaluria, relief of pruritus associated with biliary obstruction, adjunctive treatment of hyperthyroidism, binding of Clostridium difficile toxin
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to bile acid sequestrants, complete biliary obstruction.
Use cautiously with abnormal intestinal function, pregnancy, lactation.
Available Forms
Tablets—1 g; granules—5-g powder/dose
Dosages
Adults
For suspension, 5–30 g/day PO once or in divided doses two to four times/day. Start with 5 g daily or bid PO, and increase in 5-g/day increments at 1- to 2-mo intervals. For tablets, 2–16 g/day PO in 1–2 divided doses; initially, 2 g once or twice daily; increasing in 2-g increments at 1- to 2-mo intervals.
Pediatric patients
