Therapeutic Actions
Blocks the influx of calcium in the arterial smooth muscle, leading to arterial muscle relaxation and decreased vascular resistance, which lowers BP; does not affect preload or cardiac filling pressure, showing no effect on venous vessels.
Indications
BP reduction when oral therapy is not possible or is not desirable
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, soy, or egg products; defective lipid metabolism; acute pancreatitis; severe aortic stenosis.
Use cautiously with heart failure, pregnancy, lactation.

Single-use vials—0.5 mg/mL
Dosages
Adults
Initially, give IV infusion of 1–2 mg/hr; titrate quickly by doubling the dose every 90 sec to achieve desired BP; then lengthen time between adjustments to every 5–10 min. Maintenance dose is usually 4–6 mg/hr. Maximum dose, 21 mg/hr per 24-hr period.
Pediatric patients
Safety and efficacy not established.
