Bacteriostatic effect against susceptible bacteria; prevents cell replication.
Indications
Systemic
Serious infections for which no other antibiotic is effective
Acute infections caused by Salmonella typhi
Serious infections caused by Salmonella, Haemophilus influenzae, rickettsiae, lymphogranuloma—psittacosis group
Cystic fibrosis regimen
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to chloramphenicol.
Use cautiously with renal failure, hepatic failure, G6PD deficiency, intermittent porphyria, pregnancy (may cause gray syndrome in premature infants and newborns), lactation.

Powder for injection—1 g/vial
Dosages
Adults
50 mg/kg/day IV in divided doses every 6 hr up to 100 mg/kg/day in severe cases.
Pediatric patients
50–100 mg/kg/day IV in divided doses every 6 hr.
Meningitis: 50–100 mg/kg/day IV in divided doses every 6 hr.
Neonates: Usual dose, 25 mg/kg/day IV; individualize doses at 6-hr intervals. Dosage adjustment—after first 2 wk of life, full-term neonates may receive up to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses at 6-hr intervals.
Infants and children with immature metabolic processes: 25 mg/kg/day IV (monitor serum concentration carefully).
Geriatric patients or patients with renal or hepatic failure
Use serum concentration of the drug to adjust dosage.
