Description



  • Characterized by poor food absorption and intolerance of gluten — a protein found in grains, such as wheat, rye, oats, and barley


  • Usually becomes apparent between ages 6 and 18 months


Pathophysiology



  • The amount and activity of enzymes in the intestinal mucosal cells is decreased.


  • Villi of the proximal small intestine atrophy, decreasing intestinal absorption.


Causes



  • Gluten intolerance


  • Immunoglobulin A deficiency
