Therapeutic Actions
Bactericidal: Inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.
Indications
  • Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Acute bacterial otitis media due to H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis due to S. pyogenes
Available Forms
Capsules—400 mg: oral suspension—90 mg/5 mL, 180 mg/5 mL
Dosages
Adults
400 mg PO daily for 10 days.
Pediatric patients
9 mg/kg/day PO for 10 days to a maximum daily dose of 400 mg/day.
Patients with renal impairment
CrCl (mL/min) Dose
More than 50 9 mg/kg or 400 mg PO every 24 hr
30–49 4.5 mg/kg or 200 mg PO every 24 hr
5–29 2.25 mg/kg or 100 mg PO every 24 hr
