Therapeutic Actions
Bactericidal: Inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.
Indications
Lower respiratory infections, including community-acquired pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae
URIs, including acute maxillary sinusitis, caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, H. influenzae, Moraxella catharrhalis
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, S. pyogenes
UTIs caused by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus saprophyticus
Otitis media caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis
STD caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins.
Use cautiously with renal failure, lactation, pregnancy.
Available Forms
Tablets—100, 200 mg; oral suspension—50 mg/5 mL, 100 mg/5 mL
Dosages
Adults
100–400 mg every 12 hr PO depending on severity of infection; continue for 5–14 days.
Pediatric patients
5 mg/kg per dose PO every 12 hr; do not exceed 100–200 mg per dose; continue for 10 days.
