Therapeutic Actions

Bactericidal. Inhibits synthesis of susceptible gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial
cell wall, causing cell death. Effective in the presence of beta-lactamases, including penicillinases and cephalosporinases.


Indications



  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis


  • Community-acquired pneumonia caused by H. influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, S. pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis


  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes


  • Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, S. pyogenes



Available Forms

Tablets—200, 400 mg


Dosages

Adults and patients older than 12 yr



  • Uncomplicated skin or skin-structure infections; pharyngitis or tonsillitis: 200 mg PO bid for 10 days.


  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg PO bid for 10 days (chronic bronchitis) or 14 days (pneumonia).

Patients with renal impairment

For CrCl 30–49 mL/min, 200 mg PO bid; CrCl less than 30 mL/min, 200 mg PO daily.
