Therapeutic Actions

Bactericidal: Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall, causing the cell’s death.


Indications



  • UTIs caused by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species


  • Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci


  • Skin and skin structure infections caused by staphylococci, streptococci



Available Forms

Capsules—500 mg; tablets—1,000 mg; powder for oral suspension—125 mg/5 mL, 250 mg/5 mL, 500 mg/5 mL


Dosages

Adults



  • UTIs: 1–2 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses for uncomplicated lower UTIs. For all other UTIs, 2 g/day in two divided doses.


  • Skin and skin-structure infections: 1 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses.


  • Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci: 1 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses for 10 days.
