Therapeutic Actions
Bactericidal: Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall, causing the cell’s death.
Indications
UTIs caused by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species
Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci
Skin and skin structure infections caused by staphylococci, streptococci
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins.
Use cautiously with renal failure, lactation, pregnancy.
Available Forms
Capsules—500 mg; tablets—1,000 mg; powder for oral suspension—125 mg/5 mL, 250 mg/5 mL, 500 mg/5 mL
Dosages
Adults
UTIs: 1–2 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses for uncomplicated lower UTIs. For all other UTIs, 2 g/day in two divided doses.
Skin and skin-structure infections: 1 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses.
Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci: 1 g/day PO in single dose or two divided doses for 10 days.
Pediatric patients
UTIs, dermatologic infections: 30 mg/kg per day PO in divided doses every 12 hr.
Pharyngitis, tonsillitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci: 30 mg/kg/day in single or two divided doses every 12 hr, continue for 10 days.Stay updated, free articles. Join our Telegram channel
