Therapeutic Actions
Stimulates the myometrium of the gravid uterus to contract in a manner that is similar to the contractions of the uterus during labor, thus evacuating the contents of the gravid uterus.
Indications
Termination of pregnancy 13–20 wk from the first day of the last menstrual period
Evacuation of the uterus in instance of missed abortion or intrauterine fetal death in the second trimester
Postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony unresponsive to conventional methods
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to prostaglandin preparations; acute PID; active cardiac, hepatic, pulmonary, renal disease.
Use cautiously with history of asthma; hypotension; hypertension; CV, adrenal, renal, or hepatic disease; anemia; jaundice; diabetes; epilepsy; scarred uterus; cervicitis, infected endocervical lesions; acute vaginitis.

Abortion: Initially, 250 mcg (1 mL) IM; give 250 mcg IM at 1.5- to 3.5-hr intervals, depending on uterine response; may be increased to 500 mcg if uterine contractility is inadequate after several 250-mcg doses; do not exceed 12 mg total dose or continuous administration over 2 days.Stay updated, free articles.
