Therapeutic Actions
Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at histamine-1 receptors; has anticholinergic, drying, and sedating effects.
Indications
Treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
Treatment of vasomotor rhinitis
Treatment of allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods
Relief of mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema
Treatment of dermatographism
As therapy for anaphylactic reactions adjunctive to epinephrine and other standard measures after acute manifestations have been controlled
Amelioration of severity of allergic reactions to blood or plasma
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to carbinoxamine; use of MAOIs; known sulfite sensitivity (more common in asthma patients); children younger than 2 yr; lactation.
Use cautiously with increased IOP, narrow-angle glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, CV disease, hypertension, stenosing peptic ulcer, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, pyloroduodenal obstruction; pregnancy.
